The Best Outdoor Photography Locations in Markham & Toronto

Location is one of the most powerful tools in portrait photography. The right backdrop elevates an image from a good photo to a great one. After shooting across Markham, Toronto, and the GTA for years, these are the locations we recommend most often to clients — and the reasons why.

1. Rouge National Urban Park — Markham & Scarborough

Rouge National Urban Park is one of our top picks for any session. The park spans thousands of acres of forest, meadow, and river valley, giving you an enormous variety of looks in a single location. The trails near Twyn Rivers offer dense woodland with filtered light. The open meadows along the Rouge River produce warm, golden-hour tones that are nearly impossible to replicate in a studio. This is our go-to for families, maternity sessions, and engagement portraits.

2. Edwards Gardens — North York

A classic for good reason. Edwards Gardens is a formal botanical garden with manicured hedgerows, stone bridges, and seasonal blooms. Spring sessions here — from late April through May — are particularly stunning when the tulip beds are in full colour. The garden's paths and pergolas create natural frames that draw the eye directly to your subjects.

3. Unionville Main Street — Markham

Old Unionville is one of Markham's hidden gems for portraits. The historic main street, with its Victorian storefronts, brick buildings, and willow-lined creek, creates a warm, intimate backdrop. It works especially well for graduation portraits and couple sessions. Early morning on weekends, when the street is quiet, gives you clean shots without crowds.

4. Toronto Waterfront & Harbourfront

For a clean, contemporary look with the lake as backdrop, the Toronto waterfront is unmatched. The Sugar Beach area with its pink umbrellas and soft-sand foreground is popular for maternity and family portraits. The HTO Park stretch offers wide-open sky and water for dramatic, minimal compositions. Golden hour here — with the sun dropping behind the city — is extraordinary.

5. Scarborough Bluffs

Dramatic, rugged, and unlike anywhere else in the GTA. The Bluffs provide towering white clay cliffs against the blue of Lake Ontario. The lookout points at Bluffer's Park give you sweeping vistas that feel cinematic. This location works beautifully for adventurous couples and anyone looking for something more editorial and bold than a traditional garden backdrop.

6. Milliken Park — Scarborough

Milliken Park's pond, walking paths, and mature tree canopy make it an underrated option. The weeping willows along the water's edge photograph beautifully in spring and summer. It's quieter than many other popular locations, which means fewer strangers in the background and a more relaxed session pace.

Choosing the Right Location

The best location depends on your vision, the season, and what you want your photos to communicate. During your consultation, we'll walk through your ideas and match you with the location that best serves the look you're after. We know the lighting at each of these spots at different times of day — and we plan our sessions accordingly. Reach out today to start planning.
